Can you solve this?

You can use numbers 1-14 one time each. numbers 15 and 16 are given. 
Don't forget proper use of orders of operations. 
Is there are trick to solving these besides trial and error?
 If you solve it, will you teach me how? 
Do you think this is an appropriate 3rd day of school homework assignment for an 8th grade pre-algebra class?

lame things that are lame is right. I am worried for when Caleb is in 8th grade anything - and now I'm Scared for math. yikes.
Oh, and I might have some fabric. I'll bring it to Conference tonight.
